This was one of my earliest relationship projects with Raymour & Flanigan. Although I had been working for them for a few years designing, permitting and opening up many retail stores, warehouse facilities and value centers, this particular store concept was to be a flagship idea for rebranding their image for a more contemporary audience in the New York City market. Some of the ideas from this study made they way into the actual store we designed for them on 60th Street and Broadway in Manhattan. Although the decor for the store was to be more modern, hip and cool, the furniture line would not change too drastically from the more traditional furniture that they carry. This posed a challenge in bringing together the two worlds in a way that made it appropriate for the companies image. Brighter colors in combination with natural and home feeling wood, in this case bamboo, provided us with a palette to set off the main furniture throughout the showroom. In their very words, “The Furniture Is The Star”. We therefore selected wide swaths of refined colors with hits of brilliance, such as the shimmering art work produced by Ned Kahn out of California.
