American Plywood Association

The American Plywood Association was looking for innovative ways to use plywood products in the housing market. I designed two homes for this entry in 1991. Each home was to be designed on a small 5000 square foot lot but was not located in any particular region or neighborhood. I was struck by how much waste of material there is in a normal construction site. In order to make a building suitable, and build in efficiency, I took the objective that product waste should be minimized in order to maximize the value of the objective. This competition offered the opportunity to experiment with modular unit construction. A compact design and standard building dimensions provides the basis for these two distinct style homes. I utilized the standard 4′ x 8’grid to minimize material waste during construction. Timber framing and plywood used as a structural material as well as a finish product throughout the homes demonstrate the many viable options for the use of plywood.
