It’s about connection, socialization, urbanization.. less cars, more people. Less traffic, more conversation. Parklet’s are a concept that began in 2005 in San Francisco as a way to use existing parking spaces as public seating and places of interaction.
The concept involves taking back unused parking spaces, rolling out turf or whatever aesthetics you would like and creating a space for public use and relaxation. The designs are not permanent and are actually designed to be easily broken down and returned to parking spaces as needed, although that may lead to disappointment by regulars.
As these small outdoor spaces spring up in urban areas across the country, I am left hoping that the trend will sweep out little metropolis. What a great way to encourage people to stay longer and enjoy their environment.
