Recently there has been a lot of brouhaha surrounding the tear down debate of the 1.4 mile stretch of I-81 that cuts through downtown Syracuse. I am in favor of tearing it down. Cities today are reinventing themselves after years of neglect. In Syracuse, the brain drain and exurban flight can be dated to precisely the time that I-81 went up. Well, I won’t blame it all on the division that the thruway caused splitting the city in two. Much of the exodus was due to economic conditions and prevailing theories of suburbia fever.
Today we now see a rush back into cities. Humanity is faced with a fierce environmental challenge, and creating urban density is proven to be one of the most energy efficient and economical uses of earth’s limitations.
Spaceship earth is the only intergalactic planetary human transport vehicle we have, treat it well!
