The Grange Building was built somewhere around the 1920’s and has a diverse history of such businesses as car dealerships and offices. Can you believe a car dealership was located in that first floor building? Today it’s a luxury apartment building commanding some of the highest rents in Syracuse.
The greatest feature of the building is having windows on three sides. When we designed he layout we took advantage of the Hanovor Square views by putting the living rooms and kitchen areas facing the square.
What’s cool: the fire escape. Because there was only one stairway coming down to the street level, and the footprint of the building was so darn small, we couldn’t get a second means of egress out of the building. New Your State existing building codes allows for fire escapes in existing building where there is no other way of getting a second stairway in.
Can you guess the number one use of a city fire escape when there is no fire. It’s a great place to hang out. I expect some day to see someone with a small hibachi up there roasting their hotdogs.
