Central New York is not without its problems. In recent media reports, our poverty rates were listed as one of the highest in the nation. Several outfits have named Central New York and specific CNY cities as the worst places to live in America. It seems every list is focused on negatives. But we here at Syrup, politely disagree. So here, is a list of the reasons CNY is a fabulous place to live:
Natural Assets: The Finger Lakes and the Adirondacks are your back yard. Niagara Falls is your neighbor. The Ocean is a day trip away. Our water quality and abundance have contributed to the growing regional brewery and wine industry.
Weather: We get our fair share of snow, yes. But boy do we know how to handle it. Clear it, shovel it, play in it, enjoy it, capitalize on it. After the snow fades, we enjoy comfortable, beautiful summer and fall months.
Family Life: Commute times are generally short, leaving more time with our families. There are festivals, farms, fairs, sporting events, parks and enough activities to keep your kids or yourself active every weekend.
Affordability: Despite taxes that are considered high, the Syracuse-metro area has often been ranked the most affordable major housing market. Gas and food prices are also reasonable compared to many similarly sized cities.
Schools: The Central New York region has several of the NY’s highest rated schools. The tech industry is spreading across the state, increasingly attracted to our educated and innovative workforce.
People: Lower cost of living and more free time = happy people. Central New Yorkers’ are hard-working, educated and family-oriented.
Entrepreneurship: There are programs upon programs to help start-up’s get their businesses going. Co-working, innovation centers and small business resources make CNY an ideal location to bring an idea to life.
Regardless of the latest stats on what is wrong with CNY, let’s focus on what is right. After all, your home is what you make it.
