Last weekend the weather was just fabulous. My wife and I took advantage of the great summer weather we’ve had this past summer in a number of outdoor activities in and around Syracuse. One of our favorite summer weekend past times is bicycling around the newly built path of Onondaga Lake. We’ve done it a few times this year. Just recently though they completed paving the trail from the parking lot near downtown Liverpool, heading north past Onondaga State Park, a quick loop de loop left over the Long Branch Rd Bridge and another left heading back south again till you finish up just across the highway from the State Fairgrounds.
Along the way we stopped to chat with a few people, who, like us, were taking advantage of the great weather, amazing lake scenery and newly paved path. Bill, an electrician from Syracuse, shared stories about the resort hotel that was once just on the shore across from the State Fair grounds, you can see the foundations just below the water line. Alice was a retired school teacher who loves the path and was thrilled to have such an amazing experience right here in Syracuse. A family walking and laughing just past the bridge reminded me of just how rewarding a stroll along the lakefront can be. And all along the path we must have passed hundreds of people, skateboarding, bicycling, walking, jogging, rollerblading, picnicking, boating – not on the path of course.
Before winter sets in, take advantage of this amazing path and explore a rare glimpse of Syracuse, and during winter, cross country ski or snowshoe sounds just right. The plan is to continue the path all the way around the lake, I can’t wait.
