In what many might consider an unlikely partnership, Price Chopper and the village of Little Falls in upstate NY have teamed up to spur new life into an all but stagnant economic community. This example of what one time might have seemed a situation at odds with itself worked because both sides seemed to be willing to make concessions. In the end, everyone came out ahead.
As it turns out, Price Chopper wanted to be located out a few miles from the town, but an existing & struggling downtown supermarket saw an opportunity to allow Price Chopper to take over their space and revamp the building with new life. The village leaders were also savvy enough to sweeten the deal with some tax incentives if they located downtown.
Now the Price Chopper sits right in the heart of the town. Lest you think this is a case where big box walked in and walked all over a community, it was the town that reached out to the big box this time and welcomed them in.
Normally, I’d be on the side of the town beating back the big boxes from taking over the small mom and pop shops that small town America was built on. In this case though, I believe that the addition of this retailer will spawn opportunities for specialty stores to open up near back. As an anchor store, there will most likely be more foot traffic downtown than there has been int he past twenty five years.
