SIPS Panels(Structurally Insulated Panels) are manufactured sections of walls or roofs that are slowly changing the way light construction is completed. The panels consist of a thick layer of polystyrene, an insulation material, sandwiched between two structural boards. The panel creates a sturdy wall section that can be cut to any dimension either in a manufacturing plant or on site.
In terms of cost, the verdict is still out. The actual SIPS boards are slightly more costly than traditional stick framing. Much of the cost savings from SIPS panels comes in the form of efficiency in labor, reduced waste and higher efficiency for the end user.
If you are considering SIPS Panels for a project the most important decision is probably selecting a high quality manufacturer as well as a construction team that has successfully installed the panels. If done correctly,, a SIPS built building should go up much quicker than a building of the same size that is stick framed.
At Open Atelier, we are currently working through our first project using SIPS Panels. They are a great option for projects on aggressive timelines and have LEED or sustainable requirements.
